LARC April 2025 Reporter-In Residence: Jireh Deng
(Throughout 2025, LARC is supporting SoCal-based emerging reporters to produce hyperlocal stories. Our next deadline for reporting fellows is June 28th. Click here to apply.)
LA Radio Club is excited to announce our April 2025 Reporter In Residence: ✨ Jireh Deng ✨! As part of the LARC Reporting Incubator, Jireh is profiling Long Beach’s Cambodia Town district (home to the largest diaspora of Cambodians in the US) and their annual festival. According to Jireh, being able to report this story in 2025 has a special significance: “This year is the 50th anniversary of the Killing Fields in Cambodia, and the Cambodian community so rarely gets featured in the news. So getting to do an audio story to capture the richness of the cultural parade and festival is very important to me.”
Jireh will be working with LARC staff & volunteers throughout this month to produce their piece. All LARC members are able to join the monthly incubator group edits, which is a great way to learn about production and support our reporting fellows.
Here’s a little bit more about Jireh: Jireh Deng (they/them) is a multimedia journalist born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. Previously, they were a video and breaking news fellow at the Los Angeles Times. They are currently the Trans Journalist Association’s fellow at Business Insider’s economy team and co-direct AAJA national’s LGBTQIA+ affinity group. Their bylines appear in The Washington Post, The Guardian, NPR, Teen Vogue, Eater and HuffPo.

Interested in growing your leadership skills? Join LARC’s Advisory Board!
LARC is looking to add a couple of seats to our advisory board!
What is the LARC advisory board? Our current five-person board helps to shape and lead LARC’s work. The board is made up of audio folks and journalists of all ages and experience; some are longtime producers with previous board experience, while others are early-career journalists serving on an advisory board for the first time. Each member contributes approx. 4 hours a month of time helping on different needs across LARC’s programs, like the monthly events, reporting incubator and tune-ups.
(*One advisory board seat we’re looking to add, in particular, is a board member specifically to help with development and fundraising. If that’s an area of experience you have or are interested in learning more about, let us know!)
